The problem of addiction has become a serious issue in Barak Valley in the recent years. The region, with its connection to the neighboring states like Manipur, Meghalaya and Mizoram is a convenient place for paddlers and traffickers of drugs. People are most likely to begin abusing drugs—including tobacco, alcohol, and illegal and prescription drugs—during adolescence and young adulthood. By the time almost 70 percent of high school students will have tried alcohol, half will have taken an illegal drug, nearly 40 percent will have smoked a cigarette, and more than 20 percent will have used a prescription drug for a nonmedical purpose. There are many reasons adolescents use these substances, including the desire for new experiences, an attempt to deal with problems or simple peer pressure. Trying drugs may fulfill all of these normal developmental drives, but in an unhealthy way that can have very serious long-term consequences like neuro-psychiatric disorders and other diseases such as cardiovascular disease, as well as accidents, suicides and violence. Addiction to drugs not only affects the individual’s health but also disrupts their families and the whole society. Regular consumption of various substance/drugs leads to the individual substance/drug dependence and the region doesn’t have adequate support systems to help the addicts for rehabilitation. The South Borbond Gram Unnayan Samity (SBGUS) has carried out various institutional and non-institutional activities to help the victims of drug and substance abuse with rehabilitation along with generating awareness and support systems at community level.
